Four Factors: Owning the Glass = Owning the Game

Sean O'Connor

When Dean Oliver outlined the Four Factors of Basketball Success, he placed Rebounding as the third most important metric, assigning it 20% of a team’s winning formula. That number might sound modest, but any coach will tell you: rebounding decides games.

Rebounding Decides Games

Rebounding is about control. Each board is a swing in possession, momentum, and opportunity. The more rebounds you secure, the fewer second chances you give your opponent, and the more you create for yourself.

Until recently, tracking that control was a challenge. Coaches could count rebounds, but not always see how they influenced the outcome or which players consistently turned hustle into results. SportsVisio’s Coach Mode changes that by pairing AI-generated rebounding data with advanced performance metrics.

From Percentages to Possession Power

Rebounding success is often measured using Offensive Rebound Percentage (ORB%) and Defensive Rebound Percentage (DRB%):

  • ORB% = ORB ÷ (ORB + Opponent DRB)
  • DRB% = DRB ÷ (Opponent ORB + DRB)

These metrics reveal how effectively a team converts missed shots into extra possessions on both ends. Coach Mode automatically calculates them for every game, giving coaches a precise look at how their team controls the boards.

Rather than relying on total rebound counts, Coach Mode helps you see efficiency - how often your team wins the rebounding battle relative to available opportunities.

Visualizing Hustle and Impact

In Coach Mode, rebound performance connects directly to other key stats like Second Chance Points, Points in the Paint, and Net Rating. If your team is getting out-rebounded, you’ll see it reflected in both the analytics and the scoreboard impact.

For example, your team might shoot a high percentage but lose because of second-chance points allowed on the other end. Coach Mode makes that story visible. You can filter stats by player or lineup and quickly identify who consistently finishes possessions, or who needs to box out more effectively.

This turns rebounding from a hustle stat into a strategic one. Just Box Out!

Measuring Consistency and Effort Over Time

Because Coach Mode tracks data game by game, coaches can monitor rebounding trends across a full season. Whether it’s improving team boxing out, adjusting rotations, or recognizing players who generate extra possessions, every improvement is measurable.

With these insights, coaches can:

  • Quantify rebounding efficiency using ORB% and DRB%
  • Identify lineups that dominate the glass
  • Connect rebounds directly to second-chance scoring
  • Reinforce the relationship between effort and outcomes

When players see that every rebound shifts win probability, rebounding becomes more than a stat - it becomes part of the team’s identity.

The Takeaway

Dean Oliver’s third factor, Rebounding, defines effort and control. The teams that win the possession battle usually win the game.

With SportsVisio’s Coach Mode, rebounding efficiency is no longer hidden in the hustle. It’s tracked, visualized, and connected to every key outcome. Coaches get the full picture of who’s putting in the work and how it changes results.

Basketball might be a game of runs, but it’s also a game of boards and Coach Mode helps you own both.
